Towering over the lush rainforest, Arenal is one of Costa Rica’s most stunning natural landmarks, known for its perfect cone shape and striking presence.

Once one of the country’s most active volcanoes, Arenal erupted dramatically in 1968 and remained active for decades. Today, while it rests quietly, the area surrounding it thrives with vibrant wildlife and diverse plant life.

On our guided hike, you’ll explore these rich ecosystems, learn about the volcano’s fascinating history, and take in panoramic views of the volcano, its lava fields, and the beautiful Arenal Lake. This adventure is perfect for those looking to connect with nature and Costa Rica’s volcanic legacy.

What, precisely, is a volcano?
A volcano is a simple opening on the surface of a planet, circular (a crater) or elongated (a fissure), through which interior gases, rock fragments (called pyroclastic rocks, such as ash, lapilli, volcanic bombs and blocks) and streams of molten rocks (lava flows) are emitted.
The Arenal is constituted of alternate layers of volcanic ash and angular lapili, blocky lava Rows and deposits of blocks from glowing avalanches, all genetically related to the volcano.
The geological history of the Arenal volcano was plainly manifest some scant 7000 years ago, and its formation contributed to the natural turning aside of the waters of the ancestral Arenal river.
Arenal volcano started its last period of activity in 1968 up to 2010, On Monday, July 29, 1968, at 7:30 am, the Arenal Volcano suddenly and violently erupted. The eruptions continued unabated for several days, burying over 15 square kilometers (5.8 sq mi) under rocks, lava, and ash.
